Cardiff City boss Malky Mackay reveals that he has turned to Sir Alex Ferguson for advice as the promotion race nears its climax.

Cardiff City manager Malky Mackay has admitted that he has spoken to Sir Alex Ferguson for advice as the Championship promotion race nears its climax.

Mackay's side currently lead the Championship table by seven points, as the Welsh club aims to win promotion to the top flight for the first time since 1962.

Mackay, whose father played with Manchester United boss Ferguson for Glasgow club Queen's Park in the 1950s, has said that he has called on his fellow Scot's guidance at various stages in his managerial career.

"We had a conversation a couple of weeks ago on [the promotion race]," BBC Sport quotes Mackay as saying.

"He's been easily accessible and I've been able to pick up the phone and ask a question now and again.

"I don't think I'm that different from a lot of young Scottish managers that he has got a lot of time for. And that's one of the great things about him - he does have a lot of time for people; time for football people and in general for young Scottish managers who have been able to talk to him."

Cardiff travel to Watford in the Championship on Saturday.
