Danny Murphy: 'Dele Alli, Eric Dier, Jesse Lingard not ready for England'

Ex-England international Danny Murphy claims that Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Jesse Lingard are not ready to be part of the senior squad yet.

Former England international Danny Murphy has claimed that Dele Alli, Eric Dier and Jesse Lingard should not have been called up to the senior squad because they are not ready yet.

Tottenham Hotspur duo Alli and Dier featured in the friendly defeat to Spain on Friday, despite having just 50 Premier League appearances between them, while Manchester United's Lingard, who has played only five Premier League games, is in the squad to face France on Tuesday.

Murphy, who won nine caps for England between 2001 and 2003, has suggested that the trio have received call-ups when they have not earned them yet.

"I'd played a full season in Liverpool's first-team, scored double figures and won trophies before I even got an England call-up," he told talkSPORT.

"I'm not suggesting everyone has to do that of course, that is ridiculous, but a lot more water needed to go under the bridge before you got a cap.

"Lingard, Alli, Dier, they are talented lads and they could go on to be internationals, but they are nowhere near ready. If you think about a full-strength Spanish team, a full-strength German team and coming up against them, they have got no chance."

England take on France on Tuesday at Wembley.
