Former Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the leading candidate to replace Jose Mourinho as head coach of the Red Devils, according to a report.

Former Manchester United forward Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is reportedly the leading candidate to replace Jose Mourinho as head coach of the Red Devils for the remainder of the 2018-19 campaign.

United sacked Mourinho on Tuesday morning, with Sunday's 3-1 defeat at Liverpool proving to be the final straw.

The 20-time English champions are expected to bring in an interim manager until the end of the season, before appointing a long-term Mourinho replacement ahead of the 2019-2020 campaign.

According to The Telegraph, the leading candidate to become the club's head coach on a temporary basis is former Red Devils forward Solskjaer.

The 45-year-old is currently in his second spell in charge of Molde, and has previous experience of Premier League management having spent eight months at Cardiff City in 2014.

Solskjaer scored 126 goals in 366 appearances for United between 1996 and 2007, winning six Premier League titles, two FA Cup crowns and one Champions League at Old Trafford.
