Wigan Athletic manager Roberto Martinez has confirmed that they will appeal the red card awarded to Conor Sammon in their Boxing Day match against Manchester United.
The striker was sent off following a clash with Michael Carrick as the Latics suffered a 5-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
"Conor Sammon did nothing wrong. You need to accept punishment when you do something wrong but this is a normal phase of play," said Martinez.
"The red card is the wrong call. It would be very difficult to see Conor missing for three games but we'll have to wait and see."
Wigan return to Premier League action against Stoke on New Year's Eve, by which time they will be hoping Sammon's ban has been rescinded.
