Conor Sammon urges Wigan to appeal a red card decision after he was sent off at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Conor Sammon has urged Wigan to appeal a red card decision after he was sent off at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

Sammon was shown the red card by Phil Dowd for an elbow on Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick.

Wigan went on to lose the match 5-0, and Red Devils boss Alex Ferguson said after the game that Dowd's decision was "harsh".

"Conor will be keen to go down that route because he was so down in the dressing room afterwards," Wigan midfielder James McCarthy said.

"I wouldn't be surprised if we did appeal.

"I wasn't far from the incident and I didn't think it was a sending-off."

Sammon faces a three-game ban for the incident, meaning he will miss league matches with Stoke and Sunderland, and an FA Cup tie away to Swindon.
