Florentino Perez: 'Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Carlo Ancelotti as successor'

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez claims that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Carlo Ancelotti to be his replacement at Manchester United following his retirement last year.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has claimed that Sir Alex Ferguson wanted Carlo Ancelotti to replace him as Manchester United manager when he retired.

The Scot stepped down after 26 years in charge at Old Trafford last summer, with David Moyes lasting just nine months as his successor.

"Ferguson called [Ancelotti] to be his successor but he told him he had already promised to come here with us," Goal.com quotes Perez as saying.

Netherlands boss Louis van Gaal was announced as Moyes's replacement earlier this month.
