Manchester United are reportedly considering a swoop for Fulham centre-back Brede Hangeland during the January transfer window.
The Norwegian international's contract at Craven Cottage is due to expire in the summer when he will be a free agent.
However, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to avoid getting into a battle with other clubs and as a result will submit a cash offer in the winter, according to The People.
It is believed that Ferguson is keen to acquire some cover for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand, both of whom have encountered injury problems over the past 18 months.
