Manchester United will not sign on-loan Burnley forward Wout Weghorst on a permanent basis this summer, according to a report.

Manchester United will reportedly not be signing Wout Weghorst on a permanent basis this summer.

The Netherlands international moved to Old Trafford on loan in January, ending his stay at Besiktas in order to make the switch to the Red Devils from parent club Burnley.

Weghorst has been a vital player for Man United since his arrival, featuring on 19 occasions in all competitions, but he has only managed to contribute two goals and two assists.

The Red Devils will move for a big-name centre-forward this summer, with Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane at the top of their list when it comes to potential incomings.

There had been claims that Weghorst could also be signed on a permanent basis from Burnley, with Erik ten Hag's side currently short in the final third of the field.

A departure for Anthony Martial, who has had an injury-hit campaign, would strengthen Man United's need to sign a couple of new forwards in the upcoming market.

However, according to Football Insider, the 20-time English champions have decided against pursuing a permanent move for Weghorst.

The report claims that the experienced forward will therefore return to parent club Burnley this summer, with the Clarets securing promotion back to the Premier League on Friday night by beating Middlesbrough.

Burnley's plans for Weghorst this summer are unclear, but he could potentially represent the Clarets next season due to their return to England's top flight.

The Dutchman has made nine Premier League appearances for Man United this term, providing one assist, while he has also managed one assist in three FA Cup appearances.

Weghorst's first goal for the Red Devils came against Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals of the EFL Cup on January 25, before netting his second in the Europa League round of 16 against Real Betis.

The forward had been involved in every Premier League game since his arrival at Old Trafford before being an unused substitute against Brentford on Wednesday night.

Martial is now expected to receive a run in the side, providing that he proves his fitness, having featured in Man United's last two games after recovering from a hip problem.

Weghorst has scored two goals and registered three assists in 20 appearances for Burnley, while he struck nine times in 18 matches for Besiktas during a loan spell with the Turkish outfit in the first half of this season.
