Manchester United are reportedly some way off reaching a deal for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Manchester United are reportedly some way off agreeing a transfer for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

The Red Devils have been trying to sign the Dutchman throughout the summer in a bid to strengthen their midfield following the departures of Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.

Despite the two clubs entering negotiations, De Jong has expressed a desire to remain with the Catalan Giants, while Barcelona president Joan Laporta has stated that he wishes to retain the services of the Netherlands international.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, there is still some way to go before a transfer can be completed for De Jong.

Although a fee of €65m (£56.1m) has reportedly been agreed upon between the two clubs, discussions are still ongoing about add-ons which could total €20m (£17.2m), while talks over personal terms have not yet begun.

The report indicates that De Jong is still keen to stay at Camp Nou, but due to Barcelona's financial difficulties, the 25-year-old would have to agree to a reduction in wages, which he is reluctant to do.

De Jong, who has made 137 appearances for Barcelona, is contracted to the club until 2026.
