Marseille close gap with AS Monaco comeback

Marseille come from behind to beat Monaco 2-1 and close the gap on third place to two points in Ligue 1.

Marseille came from behind to beat AS Monaco 2-1 at the Stade Velodrome this evening, closing the gap on the third-placed visitors to two points in the Ligue 1 table.

The hosts made a disastrous start, and it was Joao Moutinho who gave Monaco the lead inside the first minute when he drilled a shot into the corner from around 20 yards out.

Andre-Pierre Gignac came close to making it 1-1, but his header drifted just wide before he saw a shot well held by Danijel Subasic in the Monaco goal.

Anthony Martial could have made it 2-0 when he ghosted into the box untracked, but keeper Steve Mandanda did well to thwart the chance.

There were few clear-cut chances for either side in the second period, and Ricardo Carvalho perhaps had Monaco's best opening, but his flick-on from Martial's free kick was held by Mandanda.

However, OM restored parity with 11 minutes to go when Andre Ayew headed home from Romain Alessandrini's delivery.

Alessandrini then completed the turnaround with three minutes of normal time remaining, finishing calmly from inside the area to give his side all three points.
