Remy Cabella fires Marseille to win

Remy Cabella's first goal for Marseille secures a 1-0 victory over Rennes in Ligue 1.

Remy Cabella scored the only goal of the game as Marseille climbed up to eighth with a 1-0 victory over Rennes this evening.

In an open start to the game, Rennes often looked capable of slicing open the visiting defence and came close to the opener when Benjamin Andre's deflected effort drifted just wide.

The lead belonged to Marseille moments later, though, as Remy Cabella collected the ball in midfield before beating a couple of defenders and firing home from outside the box for his first goal since arriving from Newcastle United in the summer.

Rennes continued to pose a threat, but they were fortunate not to fall further behind when Georges-Kevin N'Koudou's strike took a deflection on the way to missing the post by a few inches.

Cabella almost turned provider with an inviting free kick to find Michy Batshuayi, who could only send his effort wide after finding space in the box.

Despite only holding a slender advantage, Marseille looked in control for long spells as Rennes struggled to create opportunities.

Steve Mandanda would be forced to come to the rescue as the game entered the closing stages, and his stop from Andre's powerful header proved to be key as Marseille secured all three points to leapfrog Rennes in the table.
