Spanish players vote to continue their strike action this weekend, delaying further the start of La Liga season.

Spanish players have voted to continue their strike this weekend.

The ongoing dispute between the Association of Professional Footballers (AFE) and the Professional Football League (LFP) meant that the start of the new La Liga season was unable to go ahead last weekend, and now matches are unlikely to begin for at least another week.

The row relates to an approximate €43m (£37.5m) worth of unpaid wages to around 200 players for clubs in the Primera and Segunda Division as a result of the recession.

The LFP has offered up a pool of €40m to help cover some of the cost through to the 2014-15 season, but the AFE are unsatisfied.

"We are in a very complex economic situation," LFP president Jose Luis Astiazaran said prior to the latest vote. "If we accept that there are 200 players who haven't been paid, we are talking about 20 percent of the total. Compared with unemployment in Spain, at least they have jobs."
