Preview: Paris Saint-Germain vs. Lyon - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Sunday's Ligue 1 clash between Paris Saint-Germain and Lyon, including team news and predicted lineups.

Paris Saint-Germain will be looking to make it eight straight wins in all competitions when they welcome Lyon to the French capital for Sunday night's Ligue 1 contest.

Thomas Tuchel's side are currently 12 points clear at the top of the table, while Lyon sit in sixth position, seven points off third-placed Rennes after 23 matches of the 2019-20 campaign.

PSG might have lost three of their 23 league matches this season, but the capital giants have again proved to be far too strong for the rest of the division overall, boasting a 12-point advantage at the summit.

Les Parisiens will win a ninth Ligue 1 title this season unless something quite extraordinary happens, but it would be fair to say that all is not well in the camp.

Indeed, head coach Tuchel and star forward Kylian Mbappe exchanged words when the latter was replaced against Montpellier last weekend, while Neymar's commitment to the cause has again been questioned after he missed Tuesday's league clash with Nantes.

A rib injury was allegedly the reason for Neymar's midweek absence, although the Brazil international had celebrated his birthday with a lavish party last weekend.

On the field, things are looking good for PSG as they have won their last seven in all competitions and have not lost since the start of November. There remain question marks surrounding the French champions, though, and they will have more than one eye on their upcoming Champions League clash with Borussia Dortmund.

Lyon, meanwhile, finished third in Ligue 1 last season but have struggled for consistency this term, with a total of 33 points from 23 matches leaving them in sixth position in the table.

Les Gones are seven points off Rennes in third, while they sit 13 points off second-placed Marseille and 25 from PSG, which is quite staggering with a lot of football left to play this season.

Rudi Garcia's team have not actually won in the league since beating Toulouse on January 26, losing at Nice last weekend before drawing 0-0 with Amiens on Wednesday night.

This is not exactly the match that Lyon would have earmarked to return to winning ways, but they are still capable of picking up a positive result despite their struggles this season.

Indeed, Lyon have won two of the last four Ligue 1 meetings between the two sides, although they have not overcome PSG in a league match at the Parc des Princes since October 2007.

Team News

Neymar faces a late fitness test as he battles to overcome a rib injury, while Juan Bernat, Colin Dagba and Thiago Silva are all still on the sidelines for the French champions.

Marquinhos and Ander Herrera also remain doubts, but Tuchel could shuffle his pack from the win over Nantes with Julian Draxler among those hoping to earn a spot in the side.

Mbappe and Mauro Icardi are both expected to continue in the final third, though, meaning that Edinson Cavani - strongly linked with a January exit - is likely to have to accept a spot on the bench once again.

As for Lyon, Memphis Depay is out for the remainder of the season with a serious knee injury, while Leo Dubois, Youssouf Kone, Oumar Solet and Jeff Reine-Adelaide are still on the treatment table.

Rafael and Fernando Marcal are both back from suspension and should start, though, while Thiago Mendes is pushing for a spot in the middle of the park.

Moussa Dembele, who continues to be linked with both Manchester United and Chelsea, has scored 18 times in 34 appearances at club level this season and will again lead the line.

PSG possible starting lineup:
Navas; Meunier, Kehrer, Marquinhos, Kurzawa; Draxler, Gueye, Verratti, Di Maria; Mbappe, Icardi

Lyon possible starting lineup:
Lopes; Rafael, Marcelo, Denayer, Marcal; Tousart, Mendes; Ekambi, Aouar, Terrier; Dembele

We say: Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 Lyon

Lyon will be in better shape in terms of players than they were against Amiens during the week, but it is a tough ask to expect Garcia's side to pick up a result in Paris considering their form this season. We fancy the runaway leaders to put another three points on the board in relatively routine fashion.
