Gareth Bale fired the home side into the lead after just three minutes, driving the ball into the bottom corner from a Daniel Carvajal delivery.

The Welshman had the ball in the back of the net again inside the opening 10 minutes, but the goal was ruled out because of an offside.

Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo continued to pose a threat for Real, but it was Isco who doubled their lead shortly before the half-hour mark, curling the ball in from the edge of the box.

Bale had another chance to claim a second before the first half was over, testing Roman Weidenfeller with a powerful free kick, while Kevin Grosskreutz had Dortmund's best chance of the opening 45 minutes with a shot from just inside the box, but was denied by Iker Casillas.

The visitors tried to get themselves back into the tie early in the second half as Marco Reus slid a pass forward for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the midfielder's finish was wide.

The hosts punished the German side for their miss shortly after, as Ronaldo was given a simple finish from close range from a Luka Modric ball into the box.

There was an injury worry for the Portugal international as he limped off with 10 minutes left to play.

Bale continued to look lively as full time approached, curling the ball towards the top corner with just five minutes left to play, just missing the target.
