Real Madrid have regained their eight-point lead at the top of La Liga with a 4-1 win over Athletic Bilbao at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The visitors took a shock lead after 13 minutes when Fernando Llorente met Javi Martinez's cross to volley in from six yards.

It took Madrid 10 minutes to equalise as Marcelo exchanged passes with Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema before slotting in.

Jose Mourinho's side went ahead just a minute into the second half when Ronaldo fired in from the penalty spot following Ander Iturraspe's foul on Kaka.

The Portuguese forward converted another spot kick after the hour when Benzema was bundled over by Oscar de Marcos. The Bilbao defender was dismissed for the challenge.

A comfortable win for Los Blancos was capped with five minutes to go as Jose Callejon fired in from the angle after he had been put through by Mesut Ozil.
