Paul-Georges Ntep's second-half finish cancelled out an opener from Adrien Thomasson as Evian TG and Rennes settled for a point each in Ligue 1 this evening.
The game's first opportunity came in the 20th minute and it fell to Rennes frontman Ola Toivonen, who shot wide of the right post following skipper Romain Danze's cross.
The away side threatened again when Abdoulaye Doucoure was denied at the bottom-right corner by Benjamin Leroy, after Christian Bruls had assisted with a neat through ball.
Rennes had to be careful, though, with Youssouf Sabaly making a dangerous run to find Nicolas Benezet, whose shot was kept out by Benoit Costil to leave the score at 0-0 going into the break.
Evian should have gone two goals up in the 51st minute when Olivier Sorlin handled in his own box, but Rennes striker Toivonen saw his penalty saved by Leroy.
The stop was to prove important as Evian took the lead through Thomasson in the 62nd minute, after he was picked out by a pass from the enterprising Daniel Wass.
Their lead was to last a mere four minutes, though, with Rennes responding via Ntep's finish into the bottom-left corner as the sides settled for a 1-1 draw.
