Shakhtar Donetsk come from behind to defeat Roma

Shakhtar Donetsk come from behind to clinch a 2-1 win over Roma in Wednesday night's Champions League last-16 first leg at Kharkiv's Metalist Stadium.

Shakhtar Donetsk have come from behind to clinch a 2-1 win over Roma in Wednesday night's Champions League last-16 first leg at Kharkiv's Metalist Stadium.

The hosts began brightly and, just four minutes in, Ismaily was able to whip a low ball across the face of goal, but Facundo Ferreyra could not connect in the middle.

At the other end, Diego Perotti's cross into the box was met by Edin Dzeko but Andriy Pyatov kept the effort out before Federico Fazio's follow-up was charged down by Taras Stepanenko.

Both sides continued to trade blows in an exciting first half and the deadlock was eventually broken on 41 minutes as the visitors took the lead.

Cengiz Under got behind Ismaily and latched on to Dzeko's well-timed through-ball into the box before slotting underneath Pyatov for his first Champions League goal.

However, Roma were caught out by their own corner on 52 minutes as Ivan Ordets's clearance downfield was missed by Alessandro Florenzi.

The mistake allowed Ferreyra to claim the ball, dribble towards goal with just Kostas Manolas keeping guard and, after getting past the Greece international, slot under the onrushing Alisson.

On 71 minutes Shakhtar went on to take the lead as a free kick from Fred cleared the wall from 20 yards before coming off the top of the crossbar and crashing into the net.

Paulo Fonseca's charges almost added a third in injury time, but Bruno Peres was able to clear Ferreyra's effort off the line and over the bar.

The second leg of the tie takes place at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday, March 13.
