Shrewsbury Town remain top of League Two after victory over AFC Wimbledon

Shrewsbury Town retain their place at the top of League Two with a 2-0 victory over AFC Wimbledon.

Shrewsbury Town defeated AFC Wimbledon 2-0 in League Two this afternoon thanks to goals from Liam Lawrence and Scott Vernon either side of half-time, keeping the hosts at the top of the table.

Tyrone Barnett, Vernon and Jordan Clark all missed the target for Shrewsbury in the opening 10 minutes.

With 16 minutes played, Wimbledon goalkeeper James Shea was stretchered off after clashing with James Collins. He was replaced by 20-year-old debutant Joe McDonnell.

Craig Tanner's shot was deflected wide by Shrewsbury goalkeeper Jayson Leutwiler and David Connolly shot over the bar from the resultant corner.

Lawrence opened the scoring in stoppage time, directing the ball into the bottom left corner after Wimbledon failed to deal with Jermaine Grandison's cross.

Shrewsbury doubled their lead early in the second half, when Vernon headed the ball into the top right corner from Lawrence's corner.

Collins nearly added another in the 52nd minute, but his shot from outside the area rebounded off the cross-bar.

Four minutes later, Adebayo Azeez's attempt to pull a goal back from Wimbledon was well saved by Leutwiler.
Wimbledon pushed for a goal in the latter stages but Jake Reeves, George Francomb and Adebayo Akinfenwa all shot wide of the target.

The result sees Shrewsbury remain at the top of the League Two table whilst Wimbledon drop to 14th.
