Leeds United end Tottenham Hotspur's FA Cup hopes

Premier League Tottenham Hotspur exit this season's FA Cup at the hands of Championship outfit Leeds United.

Leeds United of the Championship pulled off an FA Cup upset this afternoon by knocking out Tottenham Hotspur in a 2-1 victory at Elland Road.

Visiting Tottenham created the clearer goalscoring chances during the opening exchanges, but they ended up falling behind with 14 minutes on the clock. Michael Brown picked out Luke Varney inside the area and the striker cut inside before curling the ball beyond the reach of Brad Friedel.

Spurs responded positively, but were unable to find the net before the half-time whistle.

Tom Huddlestone was the nearest to drawing the Premier League side level, but his volleyed effort with 28 minutes played was held by Jamie Ashdown at the second attempt.

As the half drew to a close Ross McCormack had an opportunity to put Leeds 2-0 up, but his shot was blocked by Friedel, who had come off his line.

However, just four minutes after the restart, McCormack did manage to find the net. The Scot shrugged off the attention of Steven Caulker and then sent a bending strike into the top corner of the net with his left foot.

Just eight minutes later though, Spurs were back in the contest. Gareth Bale was the creator, sending in a rising cross for Clint Dempsey to head into the net from close range.

Andre Villas-Boas's side then proceeded to push forward in search of a goal that would have forced an replay back at White Hart Lane, but their quest proved to be an unsuccessful one.

Spurs have not won the FA Cup since 1991.
