Jan Vertonghen credits Tottenham Hotspur defence

Jan Vertonghen believes that Tottenham Hotspur's defence excelled in Sunday's win over Southampton.

Jan Vertonghen has paid tribute to Tottenham Hotspur's defensive prowess following Sunday's win over Southampton.

Spurs ended a run of four games without a victory in the Premier League as they saw off the Saints 1-0 at White Hart Lane.

Vertonghen believes that Tottenham were most impressive at the back during the match, with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris earning special praise from the Belgian.

"As we did against Arsenal, we showed what we are capable of as a team," he told the club's official website. "The goal we conceded at the Emirates was a bit unlucky but this week we were strong at the back and the midfielders did a great job as well.

"The clean sheet is a bonus for us and for Hugo Lloris, who has been outstanding in the last couple of games."

Spurs are back in action on October 18 when they make the trip to Manchester City in the Premier League.
