Newcastle United eyeing January move for Andros Townsend?

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to entice Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend in January with the promise of regular first-team football.

Newcastle United will make a move for Tottenham Hotspur winger Andros Townsend in a bid to add more quality in midfield in January, according to a report.

The Magpies are one point outside the relegation zone having won just two of their first 13 Premier League matches this season, and the club's board are thought to be willing to spend in the upcoming transfer window to attempt to secure top-flight safety.

According to the Daily Mail, Steve McClaren is targeting Spurs winger Townsend and is hoping that the offer of regular first-team football ahead of Euro 2016 will persuade the England international to make the move up North.

The report claims that any deal would be likely to be a six-month loan with a view to a permanent deal in the summer, as McClaren looks to add some homegrown talent to his squad.

Townsend has not played for Mauricio Pochettino's side since a Europa League defeat at Anderlecht on October 22, and has been left out of the matchday squad recently following a row with one of the club's fitness coaches.

The 24-year-old has since been reintegrating into senior training but was merely an unused substitute in the 4-1 win over West Ham United on Sunday.
