Andros Townsend leaves Tottenham Hotspur for Newcastle United

Andros Townsend leaves Tottenham Hotspur to join Newcastle United on a five-and-a-half year contract for a reported £12m fee.

England winger Andros Townsend has completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old has swapped Premier League clubs for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the £12m region, and signed a five-and-a-half year contract on Tyneside.

Townsend becomes Newcastle's third signing of the January transfer window, following the arrivals of Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet.

Magpies boss Steve McClaren told the club website: "He is a very good talent who is a current England international and should be one for years to come, too.

"Andros is a winger with an old-fashioned style. He can play on the right or the left, is two-footed, quick, very direct and loves taking on defenders and crossing the ball.

"He feels he has a lot to prove and I can't wait to see him do that in a Newcastle shirt."

Townsend, who leaves boyhood club Spurs after falling out of favour under Mauricio Pochettino this term, made 93 appearances in all competitions for the North London side.

The England international will wear the No.25 shirt for Newcastle and could make his debut a week today away at Everton.
