Striker Michael Owen explains the reasoning behind his decision to join Stoke City on a free transfer.

Former England striker Michael Owen has described himself as "delighted" to have signed for Stoke City.

The centre-forward had been a free agent for all of the summer following his release from Manchester United at the end of last season.

Having spent the last couple of months searching for a new club, the 32-year-old eventually opted to continue his career at the Britannia Stadium by agreeing a one-year deal earlier today.

Discussing the switch, Owen confessed that a combination of manager Tony Pulis and the Stoke supporters helped convince him that it was the right move for him.

"Delighted to have signed for Stoke subject to Premier League approval," he wrote on Twitter. "We have been in talks for a while and it was a club I was always keen to join.

"I'm particularly excited at the prospect of working under Tony Pulis. He has assembled a great squad that I look forward to joining.

"I'm now looking forward to contributing as much as possible to the club and can't wait to play in front of a great set of supporters."

The Potters are the fifth club that Owen has represented.
