Stoke chairman Peter Coates criticises the FA over the improper conduct charge given to manager Tony Pulis.

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates has hit out at the Football Association over the improper conduct charge given to manager Tony Pulis.

The Potters boss, who has denied the charge, is alleged to have criticised referee Lee Probert after his side's Carling Cup defeat to Liverpool last month.

"I am surprised and disappointed because Tony made legitimate points about poor decisions," said Coates.

"I think managers are entitled to question poor decisions. I'm not saying referees can't make mistakes because we all do. But why shouldn't referees be criticised? Why should they be wrapped in cotton wool?"
