Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne says that the club will have a meeting to discuss why the pitch at the Stadium of Light could not cope with flooding at the weekend.

Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne has revealed that the Premier League club will carry out a "full analysis" of what went wrong with the Black Cats' pitch ahead of their scheduled clash against Reading.

The match was forced to be abandoned at the last minute on Saturday after areas of the pitch at the Stadium of Light were flooded.

"The club has invested a significant sum into pitchworks over the summer months," said Byrne. "We are confident that it is in first-class condition. We will however meet with our pitch consultants immediately to carry out a full analysis of the events."

Reading manager Brian McDermott raised questions over the condition of Sunderland's pitch after claiming that the Royals home ground, the Madejski Stadium, would have been able to cope with flooding.
