Sunderland came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw against Swansea City in their Premier League match this afternoon.

The Swans went ahead on the stroke of half time when Bafetimbi Gomis was slipped through by Kyle Naughton and fired into the far corner.

The visitors then made a strong start to the second half and Andre Ayew almost added to their lead when his header crashed against the post.

However, Jermain Defoe soon found the net with a clinical finish after being found by Jeremain Lens, as the Black Cats earned their first point of the season.

Goal

Costel Pantilimon: Made a number of fine saves to keep his side in the game. A one-handed stop from a close-range Gomis header late in the second half was the pick of the bunch. (8/10)

Defence

Billy Jones: Given a torrid afternoon by Montero and was beaten countless times by the winger, who he failed to get close to. (5/10)

John O'Shea: Brought back into the defence by Advocaat and provided a solid display throughout the match. Won a number of aerial duels against Gomis and was strong in the tackle. (7/10)

Sebastian Coates: Struggled against the pace of the Swansea attack and found himself out of position for the opening goal. (6/10)

Patrick van Aanholt: Tried to get forward in support of his teammates at every chance, but his final ball let him down and he was booked late on for throwing the ball away. (6/10)

Midfield

Lee Cattermole: Committed performance from the midfielder, who was never shy of making a challenge. Was booked early on for a foul on Ayew, but kept his composure throughout the rest of the match and made some vital interceptions. (7/10)

Jack Rodwell: Made a number of tackles during the afternoon and rarely gave the ball away in what was a solid performance in the middle of the pitch. (7/10)

Yann M'Vila: Always looked to get involved and help his team build from the back. Showed some neat touches and contributed to the Black Cats ending the match strongly. (7/10)

Jeremain Lens: Impressive showing from the Dutchman, who was a menace down the left wing. He constantly beat his marker and delivered some great crosses, as well as setting up the winning goal. (8/10)

Attack

Jermain Defoe: Led the line well for the hosts and showed his predatory instincts in front of goal with the equaliser for Sunderland in the second half. (7/10)

Danny Graham: Made little impact and it was no surprise when he was replaced midway through the second half. (5/10)

Substitutes

Steven Fletcher: Added strength to the Sunderland attack and was inches away from connecting with a low cross from Lens. (6/10)

Duncan Watmore: Came on to a rousing reception from the home fans, but was unable to make any impact. (6/10)

Sebastian Larsson: Brought on to take a free kick deep into stoppage time, but he fired his effort straight into the wall. (6/10)

Goal

Lukasz Fabianski: Had little to do as Sunderland managed only two efforts on target and could not have done much about stopping Defoe's strike. (6/10)

Defence

Kyle Naughton: Was given a tough time by Lens down his side of the pitch. However, he set up the goal with a powerful run through the midfield, followed by a precise pass through for Gomis. (6/10)

Ashley Williams: Assured performance from the Swansea captain. Was strong in the air and made some vital blocks throughout the match. (7/10)

Federico Fernandez: Looked solid alongside Williams and made some crucial interceptions. (7/10)

Neil Taylor: Not given too many problems at the back, but offered little to his side going forward. (6/10)

Midfield

Jonjo Shelvey: Helped the Swans to dominate the midfield and was involved in many of their best moves. Tried his luck on goal on a number of occasions and also whipped some dangerous balls into the box. (7/10)

Jack Cork: Used the ball well whenever he was in possession and battled hard in the centre of the pitch. (7/10)

Gylfi Sigurdsson: Quiet display from the Iceland international, who struggled to get into the match and make an impact. (6/10)

Jefferson Montero: Caused a number of problems down the right with his pace and gave Jones a miserable afternoon. He also delivered some telling crosses, which his teammates were unable to convert. (8/10)

Attack

Bafetimbi Gomis: Provided a constant threat for the Swansea defence and took his goal exceptionally well. He almost added another strike after the break, but saw his header brilliantly saved by Pantilimon. (8/10)

Andre Ayew: Looked lively throughout and hit the post with a header, before missing a decent chance moments later. (6/10)
