Gus Poyet: 'We have to maintain momentum'

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet is adamant that his side need to maintain the momentum from their back-to-back wins in the Premier League and the FA Cup.

Sunderland boss Gus Poyet feels that it is vital that his side continue their recent run of good form to distance themselves from the relegation zone in the Premier League.

The Black Cats defeated Burnley 2-0 last week to register their first win since December, while they followed that performance up with a 3-1 victory over Fulham to book their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

"I've noticed that the mental side is really important," Poyet told the club's official website. "As soon as the players get that confidence you can see it in the way they play because they enjoy winning.

"Victories give you a lift and it gives everyone the opportunity to perform better, so it is a good moment for anyone to jump into the team and play well.

"It is really important to play the next game and do well because we want to maintain that confidence and momentum."

Sunderland face Swansea City in the Premier League later today at the Liberty Stadium.
