West Ham midfielder Gary O'Neil wants to beat Reading on the final day of the Premier League season in order to achieve the club's pre-season aim of a top-half finish.

Midfielder Gary O'Neil is targeting a final-day victory over Reading that would guarantee West Ham United the top-half finish that they targeted at the start of the campaign.

The Hammers currently sit 10th in the Premier League table and three points against the already-relegated Royals would ensure that they would not be overtaken by the chasing pack, which include Stoke City and Newcastle United.

Everton inflicted a 2-0 defeat on an under-par United on Sunday, and O'Neil wants the team to put in an improved performance at Upton Park to guarantee that their pre-season goal is achieved.

"We need to do some work this week and make sure we finish the season on a high against Reading," he told the club's official website. "The aim from the start has been to finish in the top 10 and the fact we're safe already had no part to play in our performance on Sunday.

"It was just a poor performance all round. That's gone now, we'll have a look at it, see where we went wrong and make sure we're ready for Reading.

"We've done enough to justify being around the top ten so if we can produce a big performance this Sunday we can get there."

O'Neil has made 26 Premier League appearances this term, scoring once.
