James McCarthy insists that Wigan Athletic can take some positives from the defeat to Arsenal as they prepare to travel to Everton on Boxing Day.

Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy has urged his teammates to take confidence from their defeat to Arsenal ahead of Wednesday's game against Everton.

The Latics were beaten 1-0 at the weekend but McCarthy believes that their performance should give them confidence ahead of the trip to Goodison Park on Boxing Day.

"We created a lot of chances against Arsenal and I thought we dominated for large spells of the game. This is something we need to replicate on Boxing Day against Everton," the Scottish midfielder told the club's official website.

"If we play like we did against Arsenal then a positive results is there for the taking against Everton and for that matter, in every game we play from now until the end of the season.

"We need to take our chances against Everton and if we do then the confidence will be flowing."

Wigan have failed to record a victory in their previous five league games.
