Villarreal secure win over Wolfsburg

Mario Gaspar and Nahuel Leiva score early to give Villarreal a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in the Emirates Cup.

Villarreal have secured a 2-1 win over Wolfsburg in the pre-season Emirates Cup in London, with all three goals coming inside the opening 20 minutes.

The Spanish side broke the deadlock inside the opening 10 minutes as Mario Gaspar rifled the ball in from the edge of the box at the Emirates Stadium.

Villarreal's lead lasted less than two minutes though, as Ivan Perisic made the most of a through-ball from Daniel Caligiuri, thumping the ball past Mariano Barbosa.

The La Liga club soon regained the advantage, with Nahuel Leiva getting forward to tap the ball in from close range after a quick break led by Victor Ruiz.

Wolfsburg had plenty of possession before half time as they tried to come from behind for a second time, but Villarreal defended well to ensure that they stayed ahead.

The German side were on the attack again at the start of the second half but Joshua Guilavogui saw his long-range effort saved, before Naldo fired wide.

Caligiuri was involved again inside the final 10 minutes as Wolfsburg continued to look for the equaliser, but Andre Schurrle was caught offside as he tried to get on the end of his teammate's through-ball.

Schurrle tried to force a second goal for the Bundesliga side in the closing moments, attempting to curl the ball in from just outside the box, but he sliced it well high, leaving Wolfsburg to finish a goal short.
