England have opened their Rugby World Cup campaign with a lacklustre 13-9 victory over Argentina.
Felipe Contepomi was responsible for Argentina’s first points of the tournament, taking a successful penalty after six minutes. Jonny Wilkinson went on to equalise for England five minutes later after a penalty from a high tackle by the Pumas.
A further kick from Martin Rodriguez in Argentina’s sixth penalty of the game placed them 6-3 ahead before half-time. He did so again five minutes after the break to give his side their last points of the game.
The Pumas retained their lead until the 68th minute, when Ben Youngs managed the first try of the match. Following a series of misses, Wilkinson made the conversion count to put England ahead 10-9. The kicker solidified the victory with a further penalty on 75 minutes.
England now stand second to Scotland in their group, with four and five points respectively. England's next game will be against Georgia next Sunday (September 18).
