Stanislas Wawrinka has clinched a place in the third round of the Australian Open after Tobias Kamke retired at two sets down in their match this morning.
Kamke struggled throughout the clash with a shoulder injury and could not compete with the Swiss veteran, who broke midway through the first set to earn a 6-3 advantage.
Wawrinka showed nice variety in the second but Kamke fought back to force a deciding tie-break.
A hard-fought breaker could have gone either way but Wawrinka produced when it counted to earn a two-set advantage.
With a mountain to climb to stay in the tournament Kamke decided not to do any further damage to his injured shoulder and withdrew before the third set could get underway.
Wawrinka goes through to play Sam Querrey in round three, who in a bizarre twist also qualified earlier today when his opponent Brian Baker suffered a knee problem and had to retire.
