Julien Benneteau defies the world rankings to defeat Spain's Nicolas Almagro at the Rome International.

World number 12 Nicolas Almagro has been knocked out of the Rome International in the opening round this afternoon by Julien Benneteau, who recorded a 7-6 6-4 victory.

There was very little to choose between the two players during the first set, with neither able to make a decisive break of serve.

As a result a tie-breaker was required, which world number 28 Benneteau took control of early on, before eventually recording a 7-2 success.

The same player claimed what proved to be a crucial break during the second set and having held his own service games, he was able to book his place in round two of the competition in just under one hour and 30 minutes.

He will now take on Benoit Paire for a slot in round three.
