Maria Sharapova fights back to progress at Wuhan Open

Maria Sharapova reaches the third round of the Wuhan Open thanks to a three-set triumph over fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Maria Sharapova has come from behind to earn a three-set victory over Svetlana Kuznetsova in round two of the Wuhan Open.

The fourth seed was broken three times during the opening set as two-time Grand Slam champion Kuznetsova closed it out 6-3.

Both players exchanged service breaks early in the second, but it was Sharapova who went on to assert her authority by coming through 6-2 to level the contest against her fellow Russian.

Former world number one Sharapova opened up a commanding 4-1 lead at the start of the third, and she was able to seal her progress 3-6 6-2 6-2 with just over two hours on the clock.
