Chris Evert believes that Serena Williams was affected by nerves in her defeat to Roberta Vinci in the semi-finals of the US Open.

Chris Evert has suggested that nerves got the better of Serena Williams in her semi-final defeat to Roberta Vinci at the US Open.

The world number one missed out on the chance to claim all four Grand Slam titles in the calendar year as she crashed out of the competition at the hands of the Italian, who came from a set down to defeat the 33-year-old.

Evert told BBC Sport: "I saw a frozen Serena Williams. I saw a paralysed Serena Williams. She succumbed to the nerves. She is human."

Vinci will face fellow Italian Flavia Pennetta in the final of the on Saturday.
