Sloane Stephens has booked her place in the second round at Wimbledon by beating fellow American Jamie Hampton this evening.
The 17th seed needed just over an hour to beat her opponent 6-3 6-3 on court 18.
The 20-year-old struggled with her serve early in the opening set, giving Hampton a chance to take three break points, but she was able to settle her nerves by securing a break of her own.
A shaky start by both players saw each break at the start of the second set, but it was Stephens who was able to build momentum, giving the world number 25 few opportunities to attack her serve, before clinching another break to give herself the chance to serve out the match.
The Australian Open semi-finalist will face either Pauline Parmentier or Andrea Petkovic in the next round.
