St Johnstone edge out Luzern in dramatic shootout

St Johnstone edge a tense penalty shootout to beat Luzern and move into the third qualifying round of the Europa League.

St Johnstone have progressed into the third round of Europa League qualifying by beating Luzern in a dramatic penalty shootout at McDiarmid Park tonight.

Tommy Wright's side went into this evening's clash in Perth with a slender advantage having bagged a precious away goal in last week's 1-1 draw in Switzerland.

The Scottish Cup winners soon added to that advantage after Stevie May fired them ahead in the tie from the penalty spot.

The lead was valid for the best part of an hour but the Swiss outfit struck back on 59 minutes through Marco Schneuwly, who stroked past Alan Mannus to level up the tie at two goals apiece.

Wright's men came within the width of the woodwork from snatching victory in the dying stages of extra time, as second-half substitute Liam Caddis struck the post.

Something had to give during penalties, and it did when Mannus saved Luzern's second of the shootout, before Caddis fired the Saints ahead.

The subsequent spot kicks were infallible from both sides, before Tam Scobbie was charged with the responsibility of firing St Johnstone into the next round, and the defender made no mistake as the Scots progress with a 5-4 shootout victory.
