Liverpool are believed to have entered the race to sign wantaway Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez from under the noses of Manchester City and Manchester United.

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race to sign Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez.

The 29-year-old, whose contract runs out in the summer, is widely expected to be leaving the Emirates Stadium this year.

Sanchez was believed to be heading for Manchester City, but local rivals Manchester United have now emerged as contenders for the Chilean's signature.

According to The Mirror, the Merseyside giants have also opted to join the hunt for the highly-rated striker.

The report claims that Liverpool are eager to make a statement of intent by signing one of the most renowned attackers in world football to replace Philippe Coutinho, who has left for Barcelona.

Liverpool have already made one high-profile acquisition this January in the shape of defender Virgil van Dijk, who arrived at Anfield from Southampton for a positional world-record £75m fee.
