Aston Villa defender Ron Vlaar believes that his side's recent performances have given them confidence they can survive in the Premier League this season.

Aston Villa captain Ron Vlaar believes that his side's recent performances have given them confidence that they can escape relegation this season.

The defender has struggled for fitness this season and has managed to play just 21 games for Paul Lambert's team in all competitions.

"We have had some encouraging performances, which should help everyone's confidence over the remaining weeks of the season," he told the Express & Star.

"Injuries have contributed significantly to our current position and once again I find myself battling to overcome a calf problem. Right now I'm going from day to day in the hope that it will clear up quickly."

Villa are currently 18th in the Premier League and are in the drop zone only on goal difference as they are level on points with 17th-placed Wigan Athletic.
