Atletico Madrid head coach Diego Simeone has paid tribute to Juan Roma Riquelme following the announcement of his retirement earlier this week.
A 51-cap international with Argentina, Riquelme was highly rated throughout his time with Boca Juniors, while he also enjoyed a stint at Barcelona and played a key role in guiding Villarreal to the Champions League semi-final in 2006.
Simeone played alongside Riquelme with Argentina, and the Atletico boss was keen to reveal his admiration for his compatriot when asked about his career.
"Riquelme, I wish him well. He gave a lot to football, he built an extraordinary career. As a fan, I thank you for all the nights you gave us," Simeone told reporters.
Riquelme was named Argentina's Player of the Year four times, most recently in 2011.
