Barcelona have terminated the contract of director of football Andoni Zubizarreta with immediate effect.
The 53-year-old, who represented the club as a player from 1986 until 1994, was handed the role of director of football in July 2010.
Zubizarreta's position was due to be discussed at a board meeting on Wednesday, but Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu has wasted no time in making a decision.
"The FC Barcelona President Josep Maria Bartomeu has decided to terminate as of today the contract of the Club's Director of Football, Andoni Zubizarreta," read a statement on the club's official website.
"The President, in the name of the club, thanks Andoni Zubizarreta for his contribution, dedication and professionalism over the last four years in his role at the head of the club's football area."
It is understood that Carles Puyol could now take on the role after acting as assistant to Zubizarreta this season.
