The 25-year-old has caught the eye of Rafael Benitez, and the Spaniard will make his move when the transfer window opens in January, according to Portuguese publication A Bola.
The creative and versatile Gaitan, who has been linked with switches to Chelsea and Manchester United in the past, could be available for around €20m (£16m).
Benitez's side are currently third in Serie A.
