Half-Time Report: Callum McManaman fires Wigan Athletic ahead

An early goal from Callum McManaman gives Wigan Athletic a 1-0 lead over Birmingham City at half time.

An early goal from Callum McManaman has given Wigan Athletic a 1-0 lead over Birmingham City in the Championship this evening.

The visitors broke the deadlock after just three minutes when McManaman beat the home team's defenders on the edge of the box before drilling a low strike past Darren Randolph.

Federico Macheda tried to level the scores shortly after for the hosts, but was ruled offside as he jumped for the ball in the box.

McManaman had the chance to create a second for Wigan when he sent a cross in towards Jordi Gomez, but Birmingham got the ball clear before he could get his shot away.

Scott Carson was called into action just before the half-hour mark when an Emyr Huws cross in front of goal forced the Wigan keeper to tip the ball behind for a corner.

Randolph was tested again shortly before the break, but managed to clear the danger form a Gomez cross to leave the relegation-threatened hosts just a goal down at the break.
