Former Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies retires from football

Former Bolton Wanderers and England striker Kevin Davies announces the end of his 22-year football career.

Former Bolton Wanderers striker Kevin Davies has announced his retirement from football after 22 years in the game.

The 38-year-old was not offered a new contract by Preston North End this summer but initially said that he had one more season left in him.

However, he posted a photo on Twitter this morning showing that he has hung up his boots for good.

"I had a few offers to play on, but I didn't really feel I could have done myself justice," Davies told Bolton's website.

"Physically, I could play on for another year, but I just didn't feel like I had the fire in my belly to carry on and that's something you can't play without.

"I'm now busy with my media work. I'm also looking to finalise my UEFA A Licence and do a bit more coaching, both locally and professionally."

Davies made his league debut for Chesterfield in 1993, becoming their youngest-ever player when he appeared in a League Cup tie against West Ham United.

He moved to Southampton in 1997 and also played for Blackburn Rovers before landing at Bolton in 2003. He stayed with the Trotters for 10 years and made over 400 appearances in the Premier League.

The striker also made one appearance at international level for England, coming off the bench for a 20-minute cameo against Montenegro in October 2010.
