Ikay Gundogan confident Borussia Dortmund will beat Schalke

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ikay Gundogan insists that his side deserve their tag as favourites ahead of Sunday's Ruhr derby against Schalke.

Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ikay Gundogan is confident that his side will beat local rivals Schalke in the first Rurh derby of the season on Sunday.

Dortmund sit second in the Bundesliga table and have the chance to move eight points clear of third-placed Wolfsburg with victory after Die Wolfe lost 2-0 to Mainz on Saturday.

Thomas Tuchel's side can also move nine points clear of their local rivals with a win, and Gundogan is highly confident that his side will secure victory at Signal Iduna Park.

"We want to leave our mark on the game," he told Bundesliga.com. "We have a way of playing that is working really well at the moment, and we know what we have to do.

"We do not need to change much in our game; at most we just need to tighten a few things here and there to be able to produce another top-quality performance. That is what we will be looking to do, and I think that we will end up winners on Sunday.

"It will not be the first time that we have been favourites heading into a derby game. But it is in exactly these types of matches where you are the favourite that things can change very quickly, so it will be really important that we give absolutely everything on Sunday and play the game with our hearts on our sleeves."

Dortmund have won eight and lost just one of their first 12 Bundesliga matches of the season as they look to have adjusted seamlessly to life without Jurgen Klopp.
