Crewe Alexandra edge out Preston North End

Crewe Alexandra finish the season with a four game unbeaten run as they defeat Preston North End 2-1 at Gresty Road on the final day of the League One season.

Crewe Alexandra extended their unbeaten run to four games to end their season on a high with a 2-1 win over Preston North End at Gresty Road.

Crewe took the initiative early in the game as they took the lead in the 10th minute when Adam Dugdale headed a corner past Declan Rudd.

The home side could have doubled their advantage when Byron Moore raced through on goal and was one-on-one with Rudd, but Bailey Wright got back to make a great last-ditch tackle to stop the striker.

Uche Ikpeazu almost doubled Crewe's lead as he raided into the box, but his poked effort went just wide of the post after he got the better of Wright.

After the break, Preston threatened when Stuart Beavon teed up Joe Garner on the edge of the area, but his effort was well saved by Ben Garrett.

The save from Garrett turned out to be crucial as Crewe doubled their lead when Ikpeazu cut the ball back after raiding down the right and Mathias Pogba was there to hammer the ball home.

Preston got a consolation goal in the 90th minute when John Welsh found the net, but Crewe held out for the victory.
