Derby County secure comfortable home win

Goals from Jake Buxton, Will Hughes and Chris Martin hand Derby County a comfortable 3-0 win at Pride Park against Sheffield Wednesday.

Derby County have beaten Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 at Pride Park in their Championship clash.

The Rams dominated the game in the early stages and could have opened the scoring when Craig Bryson's shot from 30 yards was deflected, but it went just wide with Chris Kirkland stranded.

Steve McClaren's side were passing the ball well and Craig Forsyth raided down the left and fired a cross into the middle for Chris Martin, but he could only poke his effort wide.

The Owls responded on a counter-attack as Michail Antonio raced away down the left and lifted a cross into the area, but Seyi Olafinjana could not find the target with his header from close range.

Derby broke the deadlock right on half time when Jamie Ward delivered a corner into the area and Jake Buxton rose unchallenged in the air to head the ball into the net.

After the break, the home team doubled their lead when Forsyth and Martin combined down the left to set up Will Hughes at the back post, and he made no mistake in firing the ball into the net from close range.

It got better for McClaren side's minutes later when Ward turned provider for the second time in the game when he found Martin in the penalty area and the striker slotted the ball home to secure the points.
