Wayne Rooney: 'I would love to play in 2018 World Cup'

England captain Wayne Rooney admits that he wants to take part in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

England captain Wayne Rooney has expressed his desire to take part in the next World Cup, hosted by Russia in four years' time.

The 29-year-old striker, set to win his 100th cap in Saturday evening's Euro 2016 qualifier against Slovenia, has also insisted that he will never declare international retirement.

Rooney told BBC Sport: "It's so difficult when you're coming up to 30, to start planning the next four years. You have to be realistic, and there is a chance I might not go to that World Cup, but of course I would love to go.

"You never know. The Euros could be my last [tournament] but it certainly won't be me saying it's my last one. I've always said you finish playing football at a young age, so I never want to cut my career short by deciding not to play for England.

"If I get picked to go to the World Cup I would be more than happy to do that."

Rooney currently stands six goals behind 1966 World Cup winner Bobby Charlton's all-time England goal record of 49.
