Everton defender Sylvain Distin believes that midfielder Maruoane Fellaini deserves to be punished for headbutting Ryan Shawcross during the Toffees' 1-1 draw with Stoke City.

Everton defender Sylvain Distin has claimed that teammate Marouane Fellaini needs to learn a lesson after his unsavoury antics during the Toffees' draw with Stoke City.

The game finished with both sides claiming a goal apiece at the Britannia Stadium but Fellaini made the headlines after headbutting Stoke defender Ryan Shawcross and elbowing him during the match but the Belgium international went unpunished.

"He is a good player for us and he's doing amazingly this season," the Liverpool Daily Post quotes Distin as saying. "He keeps scoring goals and if anything happens to him and he gets banned I guess it'll be a lesson for him.

"We were talking about it before the game with him. Those kinds of game they are going to try and frustrate him and he needs to make sure he doesn't react badly. It's a mistake and he will learn from it."

Reports have claimed that Fellaini could be banned for as many as nine games by the Football Association.
