Karim Benzema believes that France lost to the best team in the world following Saturday's quarter-final defeat against Spain at Euro 2012.

Karim Benzema has conceded that France lost to the best team in the world following Saturday's quarter-final defeat against Spain at Euro 2012.

Xabi Alonso scored either side of half time as Les Bleus exited the competition in Donetsk.

"We lost to the best team in the world," Benzema told TF1. "It was difficult, but we played well and had a great game.

"We conceded a goal through their only genuine chance of the game. We are disappointed but pleased to have made the quarter-finals. We are very disappointed, because we know we could've beat them."

Spain will now face Portugal for a place in the final.
